Bolton University Saturday Design Club: cardboard spaceships

Official figures in January showed the creative industries contribute a massive £84.1billion a year to the economy, providing 2.8 million jobs and confirming the UK’s position for creativity as no.1 in the world.

In the wake of the EU referendum outcome, we need creative thinkers more than ever to see us through the challenges ahead. As we prepare to leave one club, another is revolutionising our education provision and creating a brighter future by developing the UK’s next creative generation.

This is a club I am incredibly proud to be a member of.

Now celebrating its seventh year, the National Art&Design Saturday Club gives young people aged 13–16 the unique opportunity to study art and design on 30 Saturdays a year at their local college, university of museum for free.

Creative Journeys from The Sorrell Foundation

The newly created Saturday Club Trust will now take over the development of a national network from the Sorrell Foundation. Additionally, it is pioneering National Science&Engineering and National Fashion&Business Saturday Clubs. Writing&Talking Saturday Clubs are also to follow.

For the past year, over 50 colleges and universities have opened their doors every Saturday morning to nurture young talent from over 400 local schools. Over 1,200 talented young Club members accessed this year's free programme includes expert tuition, visits to London museums and galleries, and masterclasses from world-class designers, artists and architects.

This year I collaborated with Paul Priestman and PriestmanGoode to provide a Masterclass for Bolton University's Saturday Club students.

Their brief was to design a space ship for two families on vacation for a week. Club members provided solutions to the needs of their imaginary families within spatial environments. Teams developed their ideas through physical models and presented their concepts to the group.

The Saturday Club is a national movement; see the inspirational results at this year’s Summer Show.
